The South End Community Day Care was established in 1972. The city of Halifax received grant money from the federal government to establish several centres in the city. In 1974 the centre was incorporated as a registered society and has since operated as an independent organization. The centre first opened in the basement of Fort Massey United Church and in 1973 moved to a building (since demolished) on University Avenue, next to the old Civic Hospital. At that time, the centre grew from 25 children, aged two years to five years, to 60 children, aged 18 months to 12 years. In 1976, the board was approached by the South End Neighbourhood Improvement Committee offering a new space as part of their project.
The centre has been in its current location since 1983. We have grown and now have a license for 63 children aged 6 months to 12 years.
